Product Description
The Harman Kardon AVR-635 combines the sonic power of a high-current, ultrawide-bandwidth amplifier with the computing power of Texas Instrument's most advanced audio DSP to deliver unparalleled performance.

Thanks to Harman Kardon's advanced EzSet/EQ functionality, the AVR-635 not only automates speaker output and delay settings; it corrects for room acoustics with a parametric equalizer. Add video conversion circuits that output all video sources via component connections with on-screen graphics, and you have the power to tame any system and deliver powerful performance.

EzSet/EQ Using a standard, high-precision microphone, and onboard test and control circuitry with accuracy that rivals expensive test gear, EzSet/EQ not only configures your system for the correct speaker settings, delay times and crossover frequencies; it uses a parametric equalizer to optimize the receiver's output to match the sonic signature of your listening room.

A-BUS Ready Connectivity, configurable rear surround amplifiers and a standard Zone II remote make it incredibly easy to bring Harman Kardon sound to other rooms in the house. Surround Mode Selection

The ability to reproduce a full multichannel surround sound field from digital sources, analog matrix surround-encoded programs and standard stereo programs. Selection of a surround mode is based on personal taste, as well as the type of program source material being used.

If you're technologically-challenged, or simply can't wait to get your AVR635 A/V receiver up and running, then Harman Kardon's EzSet/EQ feature (built into the eight-device, two-line display remote control) was developed especially for you. Using a standard, compact (2.25" high by 1.50" in diameter), high-precision microphone and built-in test and control circuitry with accuracy equaling expensive laboratory equipment, EzSet/EQ not only configures your system for the proper speaker settings, time delays, and crossover frequencies; but also uses a parametric equalizer to optimize the receiver's output performance to match your listening room's sonic signature. Parametric equalization differs from--and is more sophisicated than--traditional graphic equalization. Based on measurement and analysis of three sonic parameters--frequency, amplitude, and bandwidth--parametric equalization results in a superior set of adjustments to cancel out the sonically-damaging effects of a room's architecture and furnishings. Harman Kardon designs receivers to work with your individual listening environment, not against it.

Virtual Surround Sound From Analog Sources

Versatile and multifeatured, Harman Kardon's AV635 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver incorporates a wide range of listening options to match your every need. In addition to Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES 6.1 decoding for digital sources, a broad choice of analog surround modes are available for use with sources such as CD, VCR, TV broadcasts, and the AVR635's own FM/AM tuner. And, speaking of the tuner, this receiver offers an upgrade slot for digital radio. Along with Dolby Pro Logic IIx decoding technology, the AVR635 boasts Harman International's exclusive Logic 7 process to create a wider sound environment with more defined fly-overs and pans, where the surround sound transitions from the speakers on one side to the speakers on the other side. Proprietary digital algorithms are used to create a more cohesive and enveloping sound field from the tens of thousands of currently available analog matrix soundtracks. Not only is Logic 7 capable of resolving either five or seven channels from a two-channel source; but it also increases the accuracy with which sounds are directed to the center and surround channels, for more precise reproduction of the original soundtrack. Another exclusive is VMAx, which uses proprietary processing to create an open, spacious sound field even when only two front speakers are available. Digital processing can create the illusion of multichannel sound from only two speakers. Using a series of complex calculations based on intensive research into the way we hear and process sounds, VMAx creates a three-dimensional sound field using only conventional left and right front speakers. With VMAx, you get sound that fills your room and puts you in the first row, center.

Future Connections

For the ultimate in flexibility, the AVR635 features three, assignable, HDTV-compatible component video and five S-Video inputs for connecting video devices. There are four additional audio inputs; and with a total of eight video inputs, the AVR635 is capable of handling all the latest A/V sources. Coax and optical digital audio inputs/outputs are also available for direct connection to digital recorders. This bounty of connections, plus 6/8-channel direct audio inputs with bass management and bi-directional RS-232 integrated system control port make the AVR635 virutally future-proof, with everything needed to accommodate tomorrow's new formats right onboard. Similar to the serial port on a computer, a bi-directional RS-232 connection allows electronic devices to both send and receive data at the same time. This port makes it possible for the AVR635 receiver to be controlled by an external computer or by a programmable remote control that uses RS-232 commands. There's also an RJ-45 jack for use with an A-BUS system. Using a single CAT-5 (Ethernet) cable, A-BUS modules (not included with receiver purchase) can be connected so that speakers in a remote zone--another room--can be powered directly from amplified in-wall controllers without the need for any additional power sources. For full system control in any room, the controllers are capable of sending IR remote commands back to the receiver. Harman Kardon has anticipated future technologies and provided the means for you to take advantage of them.

Think Fast

If the AVR635 receiver were to be described in terms of human physiology, then the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) would be the brain while the amplifier would be the heart. Harman Kardon selected the DA610 Aureus Audio DSP from Texas Instruments to do the thinking for this receiver. And think it does, delivering 1800 MIPS (million instructions per second) and 32/64-bit native processing. The DA610's open audio framework allowed Harman Kardon to incorporate proprietary audio processing algorithims to give the AVR635 best-in-class performance. Demonstrtating even more intelligence, this receiver automatically up-converts video input signals (composite and S-Video to component) for a higher-quality, single-cable connection to the display device. Pumping out power for this receiver is a HCC (High Instantaneous Current Capacity), ultrawide bandwidth amplifier rated at +/-50 amps. Watts-per-channel is not the only measure of amplifier power; in terms of dynamic range and impact, current counts too. Using Harman Kardon's traditional high-current amplifier design technologies, there is more than enough power available to meet effortlessly the wide dynamic range of any program selection; and produce tighter bass, superb transient response, and enhanced presence at any volume level.

Talk To The Remote

Enhancing the internal sophistication of the AVR635 is the external simplicity of the fully-illuminated, eight-device, learning and programmable remote control with two-line LCD display. This remote controls not only the receiver's functions, but also most brands of A/V equipment including DVD/CD players, cassette decks, TVs, cable boxes, VCRs, satellite receivers, and other home theater devices.

Capable of learning codes not in its internal code library, you simply "tell" this remote what brands of equipment you're using and it does the rest. No more looking up codes and entering numbers manually. When you select a source, the function for each button selected is displayed on the LCD screen.

The guesswork is gone. Also residing in the remote is Harman Kardon's exclusive EzSet/EQ system with built-in sound-pressure-level meter and calibration procedure that takes the complexity out of balancing your multichannel sound system. The AVR635 gives you all the power, performance, and control you need, both for today--and tomorrow.
